Trip to Iraq, April 18 to 25, 2005

From April 18 to 25, 2005 we were again in Basra. The visit had become necessary for various reasons, most importantly because of the start of the renovation of another department of the children’s hospital in Basra, the department for obstetrics and premature births. Caritas Austria will fund the refurbishing of the totally pathetic department. The poor conditions on this section and its high mortality rate were known all over Basra and mothers refused to have their children checked into that department. It is hoped that this will soon change. The negotiations with the firm, which will do this work, were promising and the structural phase is supposed to be finished in July. After that the work of furnishing the department can get started.

In the second week of December we (Dr. Eva-Maria Hobiger and Eng. Bashar Hindo) were in Iraq again. We decided on this trip in spite of the situation there, which is especially dangerous for foreigners, because the success we had achieved before could only be secured by an additional substantial delivery of relief supplies. In fact, the stock of pharmaceuticals, which we had supplied in the past, was nearing its end and some medications had already run out completely.
