Medical Treatment in Austria |

Within the framework of our project to support
sick children in Basra some Iraqi children came to Austria for medical treatment.
These children cannot be treated in their hometown, since either there is a lack
of the necessary medical equipment, or knowledge. |

severe valgus deformity of both legs |

Fadi is 12 years old
and I met him in June 2004 on the eve of my departure from Basra. Once
again there was a power failure and so I examined the boy by
candlelight, since the family doesn’t have a generator. I viewed the
x-rays with a flashlight. Fadi has a severe growth disturbance of the
bones in his legs. This has caused extreme knock- knees, which makes
walking very difficult for him. He is very small for his age; one could
take him to be 10 years old. In spite of it, this shy boy is the best in
his class and his achievements in school are truly above average. I took
his x-rays with me to Vienna and the University Clinic for Orthopedics
in Vienna promised that they would perform the necessary surgery. On
January 9, 2005 Fadi, together with his father, arrived in Vienna and on
the next day he was admitted to the Vienna Allgemeine Krankenhaus.
After
some days two operations were done and Fadi got casts on both legs. He
was not allowed to stand or walk on his legs for seven weeks. End of
February the legs were checked by x-ray and as everything was okay he
was sent home on March 7 together with his father. He got another cast
for six weeks but he was allowed to walk by the support of crutches. The
casts were removed during the month of April in Basrah. The result of
his treatment was very satisfying.
On experience with Fadi made me very sad, as it shows clearly how
traumatized Iraqi children are. Especially in Basrah there were air
raids during years. Fadi was sleeping in his accomodation in Vienna and
just when his father sneezed rather loud the boy waked up and shouted:
“Where is the bomb? Where is the bomb? Was our house targeted?“

Bassam
is 25 years old, thus no longer a child. We
nevertheless decided to bring him to Vienna for treatment. Bassam too
lives in Basra. In July 2003 a mortar round was fired into the store
where he was working. Bassam was standing in front of the store at the
time and was hit by a shell fragment that ricocheted from a wall. The
blast threw him to the ground and the fragment entered his right eye.
From a distance of 10 yards several bullets were fire at him, but
miraculously none hit him. It probably would have been possible to save
his eye within the first week afterwards, but all the prerequisites for
such an operation are lacking in Basra. This way however, Bassam lost
the sight in his right eye and he is out of work since then too. There
is no possibility to get a prosthesis in Basra and now he is to get one
in Vienna.
Surgery was done
middle of January 2005 in Vienna and he got a
moveable prosthesis for the eye. The operation was so perfect that
nobody can notice that he has lost his right eye – which is very
important for such a young man. Bassam was very happy about this result.
Together with Fadi and his father he returned to Basrah on March 7, 2005

10 years |
|
Disease : |
Congenital hemangioma of the intestines
and skin |

Hospital in Austria |

clinic, Department for surgery.

Mustafa suffered from a congenital
irregularity of the blood vessels (multiple congenital
hemangioma), which are located in the skin and in all the intestines.
The irregularities in the intestines caused continuing hemorrhages, as a
result of which Mustafa had to have two blood transfusions a week. He
therefore had to go almost daily to the hospital, but that still did not
keep him from being the best in his class last year. Frequent blood
transfusions, however, cause severe damage to the organism in the long
run, but treatment of this illness in Iraq was impossible. On August 14,
2004 Mustafa came to Austria, together with his father and was admitted
the next day to the Regional Children’s Clinic in Linz.
Mustafa
underwent lengthy tests before a decision on the dangerous surgery could
be made. The surgery was performed successfully, despite all prior
fears. More than 70 hemangiomas could be surgically removed from the
intestines. Later, more than 140 hemangiomas were removed from the
skin, in the course of three more operations. Mustafa underwent
anesthesia 10 times, but he recovered quickly and gained 12 lbs. His
blood count remained stable and he needed no more transfusions. On
December 15. 2004 he returned to Basra via Damascus and Baghdad with his
father. The plan is for him to come to Austria in a year for a checkup.

Congenital hemangioma of the left hand |

Dureid was one of the few exceptions, who was accepted as an
adult into our relief program, since within its framework only children are
being brought for treatment to Austria. There was danger, however, that this
young man from Northern Iraq would sooner or later lose his left hand.
A huge, benign tumor
(a
so called simple hemangioma) on the left hand, present since birth has
been growing in size constantly. It put pressure on the tendons, nerves
and blood vessels and we therefore decided to bring Dureid to Austria.
The TILAK (Tiroler Landeskrankenanstalt GmbH) promised treatment in
Innsbruck and on September 13, 2004 the young man arrived in Austria.
The very costly and complicated operation took place a few days later.
There were no post-operative complications and Dureid was able to return
to his homeland with a renewed zest for life on October 26, 2004.
We thank the entire staff of the department for plastic surgery in Innsbruck, of
the Tiroler Landeskrankenanstalt, as well as Univ.Doz.Dr. Rafic Kuzbari in

The 17-year-old Zena came to
Vienna for medical treatment in March of this year. Last year in June a
malignant tumor had been discovered in one of her knee joints, but the difficult
post-war conditions in Iraq did not permit adequate treatment. Thanks to the
cooperation of the clinic management of the Orthopedic Clinic of the Allgemeines
Krankenhaus in Vienna she underwent successful surgery and now has an excellent
chance of survival. Her only wish of life, to be free of pain, just as other
girls her age, could be met. In May of this year she returned to Baghdad,
together with her father.

Disease : |
Osteogenesis imperfecta
(Brittle bone disease) |

Hospital in Austria |
Orthopedic Hospital, Vienna –

|
The seven-year-old Sarah was an unexceptional child until age 3. At that time
she suffered, for the first time, a fracture of a thighbone. The diagnosis was
osteogenesis imperfecta, a congenital bone disease. Even in our country is the
treatment of this disease very difficult, but in Iraq it is completely
impossible to do anything for such a child. The girl suffered seven more bone
fractures and spent months in plaster casts. She could no longer walk and
suffered from severe pain.
We have been trying since January 2003
to bring Sarah to Austria, but the war in Iraq delayed this plan. In
November 2003, however, the time had come and Sarah was admitted to the
children’s orthopedic department of the Speising Hospital. A few days
before Christmas she received implants in both thighbones, which were
fabricated especially for her and for seven weeks she had to wear a cast
covering her pelvis and legs. During her in-patient stay she
participated in school lessons at the department and was looking forward
to attending school at home too.
Strenuous weeks of rehabilitation
followed. Sarah had to learn to walk for a second time, with the
assistance of prosthesis and a walker. There were setbacks (3 minor
fractures), but she came to the hospital every day for physical therapy.
Today Sarah is overjoyed with her newly
won freedom and is able to walk short distances by herself. A long road
is still ahead of her, she will continue the exercises to strengthen her
muscles, which she has learned, with her father at home. On July 19,
2004, together with her father, Sarah returned home to Basra via Kuwait.

When little
Aziz was born it was not likely that
he would have a long life. He was afflicted with a serious congenital heart
defect – the so called Fallot’s tetrad – a heart defect which cannot be operated
on in Iraq. At 19 months Abdelaziz was actually too old for this surgery, which
should be performed during the first year of life.
 |
|
Before the flight home |
He was admitted at the
beginning of December 2003 to the department for cardiac surgery of the
University Clinic in Vienna. He had to undergo surgery twice, because
complications had already arisen, due to the late point in time of the
operation. After a relatively long stay in intensive care it was possible to
discharge him on January 9, 2004 from the hospital. He has recovered well and
surely will soon make up the delay in his development, caused by the chronic
oxygen shortage. On February 2, 2004 Abdelaziz and his mother returned
home to Iraq. During our visit in Iraq in June 2004 we learned that
Abdelaziz is doing extremely well and that he has developed into a
normal child. |

Qand
has been suffering
from a cataract in her right eye since birth. During surgery in
Austria it was discovered that the optic nerve of that eye was not
fully developed, so that it was unfortunately impossible to restore
her sight. The – until then undetected – defective vision of the
other eye was corrected with eyeglasses and Qand returned on
December 22, 2004 to her homeland.

Zainab
has been severely ill for two and a half years. She could no longer attend
school, was apathetic, complained of pain, could not see well and was barely
able to walk. Her father, a part-time teacher from Qurna in Southern Iraq, spent
what little money he earned on Zainab, but no doctor could help her, because
they did not know what illness she was suffering from. We first learned about
her in June 2003 and decided to bring her to Austria to sort things out.. Only
in November was it possible to carry out this decision, due to the difficult
political situation in her homeland. Zainab was deathly sick when she arrived in
Austria and was admitted to the University Clinic in Innsbruck on November 30,
2003. A diagnosis was soon established: Takayasu Arteriitis, a very rare disease
of the blood vessels. Treatment was initiated and Zainab, who had arrived
together with her father, soon became the darling of the department. Six weeks
later she was discharged from the hospital in Innsbruck and a totally
transformed Zainab arrived for the second time in Vienna.

before
returning home |
She now wears glasses, laughs a lot, is
looking forward to go back to school and gives the impression of a
healthy girl. She will still have to take medications for two years and
will have to have regular checkups. She returned to her homeland with
her father on February 2, 2004. From the doctor treating her, Prof. Dr.
Jenan, we learned during our visit in Basra in June 2004, that Zainab is
doing very well. In view of the bad security situation we were
unfortunately unable to visit her. |

On April 21, 2004 there was a
devastating bomb attack in Basra in front of the central police station, in
which altogether 71 people died. Hundreds were injured. A fully occupied school
bus passed by at the time of the attack. Several children on the bus were
killed. Eight girls - between 14 and 17-years-old - who sat in the rear of the
bus, suffered facial wounds from bomb fragments. Injuries, which have changed
their lives, because although Evlin, Evett, Rhagad, Zainab, Dhuha Sura, Randa
and Ban have survived this catastrophe, it will cast a shadow over their lives
for ever. At this time it is still too early for plastic surgery, but we plan to
bring the girls to Austria next year to treat the disfiguring scars. |
