In 1996 SAAR began its assistance programs in the Arab Republic of Yemen. Most of them are aimed at supporting health care institutions. Regular support goes to the following institutions:

In addition to above, donations coming up to USD 12,000 were given to the kidney and malaria centers enabling them to purchase urgently needed spare parts locally.
July 1999:
These items were distributed among the City of Light, the kidney center in Hodeidah, and the Al-Thawra Hospital in Sanaa.
Delegations:
March/April 1997:
Visit by a SAAR delegation which included the chief physicians Prof.
Dr. Abdulrahman Aburumieh, Prof. Dr. Peter Balcke and SAAR
Secretary-General Fritz Edlinger. The delegation members handed over
the relief goods and discussed further cooperaion terms.
March 1998:
Another SAAR delegation composed of physicians, SAAR representatives
and journalists visited Yemen and the several projects sited
respectively. One outcome of the meetings was to include the "City of
Light" in SAAR's assistance efforts.
June/July 1999:
A physicians delegation including chief physician Dr. Mohammed
Charkasi (ENT), Dr. Michael Matzner (orthopedist), Dr. Martin
Wiesholzer (nephrologist) and SAAR Secretary-General Fritz Edlinger
visited Yemen. The Austrian physicians conducted examinations and
operations at the Al-Thawra hospital in Sanaa and the leper hospital
in Taiz. Moreover, the kidney and malaria centers in Hodeidah and
serveral health care institutions in Hadramaut were seen as well as
plans developed to include the kidney center in Mukkala (Hadramaut)
in SAAR's relief efforts.
February 2000:
Another SAAR delegation composed of Prof. Dr. Rainer Kotz, head of
the orthopedic ward at the Viennese General Hospital, and Dr. Michael
Matzner as well as SAAR Project Coordinator Elke Zeiringer visited
Yemen. While the physicians conducted numerous operations and
examinations in the leper hospital in Taiz, SAAR Project Coordinator
met with Yemenite project partners in Sanaa, Hajja, Hodeidah and
Taiz. The delegation members took along with them new surgical
instruments, suturing material, dresses, bandanges, and drugs which
valued at roughly ATS 400,000.
Training programs:
July/June 1998:
For a period of six weeks Dr. Mohammed Al-Rohani, the medical
director of the kidney center in Hodeidah, stayed at the nephrologist
ward of the St. Pölten hospital to find out about the latest
methods in his area of specialty.
September/October 2000:
For a period of two months Dr. Tanweer S. Husain, a young femal
dentist, participated in a training program at the General Hospital
(AKH) Vienna.
